SALUTATIONS TO KRISHNA- GURUR GARIYAN

NATIVE  CHARM

SALUTATIONS TO SRI KRISHNA- GURUR GARIYAN!

We have seen (in the last 4 posts) that the Gita is our greatest scripture, and Bhagavan advocates ananya bhakti as THE ultimate sadhana. Sri Krishna thus emerges as our greatest Guru- gurur gariyan, in the words of Arjuna. We should all feel  immensely grateful to this scion of the Bharata dynasty for getting this supreme teaching from Bhagavan.

But there is another reason we should be grateful to him. In our religious lore, we get lot of stotra literature. Many sources have contributed to it: devas like Indra, Rishis,Sages and Munis, learned people. Even Rakshasas like Ravana have composed stotras!

But Arjuna is unique. He was a comrade (sakha)  of Bhagavan. Sri Krishna Himself said that he was endowed with the divine qualities (daiva sampat).  He was called sinless- anagha. Bhagavan called him dear- Ishtosi, priyosi. Our tradition considers him inseparable twin of Bhagavan- in the form Nara-Narayana. When we have prayers composed by him, therefore, it must be special .This is what we have in chapters 10 and 11 of the Gita.

When Arjuna listens to the Vibhutis of Bhagavan and beholds His Universal Form, he is overwhelmed and spontaneously sings Bhagavan's glories. Can we get more exalted prayers anywhere? Let us also recite the stotra uttered by Arjuna.

यच्छ्रेयः स्यान्निश्िचतं ब्रूहि तन्मे

English Translation By Swami Sivananda
2.7 My heart is overpowered by the taint of pity; my mind is confused as to duty. I ask Thee: Tell me decisively what is good for me. I am Thy disciple. Instruct me who has taken refuge in Thee.

pruchchami tvaam dharma sammudha chetaa:
Yat sreya: syaan nischitam bruhi tanmae
Sishyastaeham saadhi maam Tvaam prapannam.

This is what initiates the Gita teaching proper. Here, Arjuna submits in humility to Bhagavan and seeks from Him  the wisdom that will save him from evil and lead to his welfare. Let us too submit likewise .

11.41 Whatever I have presumptuously said from carelessness or love, addressing Thee as O Krishna! O Yadava! O Friend! regarding Thee merely as a friend, unknowing of this, Thy greatness.

11.42 In whatever way I may have insulted Thee for the sake of fun, while at play, reposing, sitting or at meals, also (with Thee), O                                                                                                                             Krishna, or in company that I implore Thee, immeasurable one, to forgive.

11.43 Thou art the Father of this world, moving and unmoving. Thou art to be adored by this world, Thou, the greatest Guru; (for) none there exists who is equal to Thee; how then could there be another superior to Thee in the three worlds, O Being of unequalled power!

11.44 Therefore, bowing down, prostrating my body, I crave Thy forgiveness, O adorable Lord. As a father forgives his son, a friend his (dear) friend, a lover his beloved, even so shouldst Thou forgive me, O God.
